Ke Dezemba: Summer in the Mother City
Share
December is Cape Town's golden month: summer at full strength, daylight past eight in the evening, and a mountain that watches over everything. The Mother City does a lot of things well — in December she does them all at once. Here is how to spend her best season.
Mountain mornings
Start early, before the wind picks up and the famous tablecloth of cloud rolls over Table Mountain. The cableway at opening time is the calmest ride of the day, and the views run from Robben Island to the Twelve Apostles. Hikers should take Lion's Head at sunrise — an hour up, a lifetime of photos.
Winelands afternoons
Stellenbosch and Franschhoek sit under an hour from the city, all oak-lined streets and mountain-ringed vineyards. Ride the wine tram between estates, linger over lunch, and let the afternoon go soft around the edges. This is the Cape at its most civilised.
Coast by evening
End days by the water: Chapman's Peak Drive at golden hour, the penguins at Boulders Beach near Simon's Town, sundowners in Camps Bay as the sun drops into the Atlantic — or on it, with a sunset cruise out of the V&A Waterfront. Book the boat on a clear evening and thank yourself later.
